What sites are there to see in Independence, Missouri, related to Harry S. Truman?

Independence, Missouri, is the city where U.S. President Harry S. Truman grew up, and the town is proud of that aspect of its history. Among the Truman related sites to visit are:

The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum, has numerous exhibits related to Truman’s life. It also hosts community events such as symposia related to current events.

The Truman Home is managed by the National Park Service and is the only home that Truman and his wife, Bess, ever owned. Tours are by reserved ticket only, available at 223 North Main St. in downtown Independence.

The Jackson County Courthouse has preserved Truman’s former office and courtroom that he used as county judge.

Clinton’s Soda Fountain is a downtown restaurant that doesn’t look like it has changed all that much since Truman had his first job there.

The Truman Historic Walking Trail features dozens of plaques that explain his connections with Independence.

For history buffs, Independence is also host to the National Frontier Trails Museum, which has displays on the Oregon, Santa Fe and California trails. Tours are also offered of historical mansions as well as a jail, a log cabin and other structures from the 1800s. Independence, is also home to various religious sites connected with Mormon history.
