The amount of sugar in breakfast cereals varies greatly. Some of the highest sugar centents are found in cereals marketed to children.

Here are the sugar contents of some products on sale in the UK in January 2009:

  • Sainsburys Basics Corn Flakes 3.4% (added sugar)
  • Weetabix 4.4% (added sugar)
  • Sainsburys Rice Pops 9.7% (added sugar)
  • Sainsburys Malties 15% (added sugar)
  • Kelloggs Raisin Wheats 15% (from raisins)
  • Sainsburys Wholegrain Bran Flakes 17.1% (added sugar)
  • Sainsburys Fruit And Nut Muesli 19.3% (from dried fruit)
  • Nestle Fruitful Shredded Wheat 20.2% (from dried fruit and added sugar)
  • Nestle Cheerios 21.6% (added sugar and partially inverted brown sugar syrup)
  • Kelloggs Crunchy Nut Clusters Honey & Nut 25% (added sugar, honey, invert sugar syrup and glucose-fructose syrup)
  • Kelloggs Crunchy Nut Clusters Milk Chocolate Curls 31% (added sugar, honey, invert sugar syrup and glucose-fructose syrup)

Manufacturers sometimes reformulate their products, so these figures can change. They can also vary in different markets, and the sugar content from included fruit can vary seasonally.

The fat and salt content of breakfast cereals also varies greatly, and some cereals are made from wholegrain cereals.
