What is Brasilia’s city profile?
Brasilia is the capital of Brazil and the fourth largest city in the country.
The city was planned and developed beginning in 1956. Brasília was built in 41 months, from 1956 to April 21, 1960, when it was officially inaugurated. Just five years before, the area resembled a desert, with no people, scarce water, few animals and plants.
Planned for only 500,000 inhabitants, Brasilia has seen its population grow much more than expected. Several satellite towns have been built over the years to accomodate the extra people. Many of the city’s well known modern buildings are spectacular, but still not functional, and visitors usually dislike that very few people are found on the streets and there are great distances between the buildings. Brasilia has the amenities of any modern city with excellent restaurants, shopping and night life.
The climate is tropical savanna with seasons being defined by the degree of humidity. One season is dry, while the other one is humid. The average temperature is 69 degrees Farhenheit. September, at the end of the dry season, has the highest average maximum temperature, 82.9°F), and July has the lowest average maximum temperature, 77.2°F.
Baasilia is served by Brasília International Airport. Public transportation is by buses, taxis and the Metro.
Brasilia population is 2,557,000 (2008)
