How can I check that my plumber can install gas?
If you are looking for a plumber to carry out work on a gas boiler or other gas installation in your home in the UK, then from 1st April, by law, you must ensure that they are qualified to do so and registered on the new Gas Safe Register.
The Gas Safe Register starts on 1 April 2009 and replaces the current CORGI register which finishes on 31 March 2009.
The new registration scheme will be run by Capita Group Plc., on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive. The register is required because has been identified there are still many safety issues associated with domestic gas installations, with many deaths still occurring from gas and carbon monoxide poisoning. Some caused by unqualified plumbers fitting gas boilers, fires and cookers incorrectly, or home owners trying to carry out their own repairs.
How will I be able to identify a Gas Safe engineer?
Ask for their ID card which will have a licence number and a photograph. You can then check the ID card on the Gas Safe website or by phone. The ID Card will detail which parts of the system the plumber can work on: pipework, cookers, gas fire, etc.
