Tbilisi is the capital of the Republic of Georgia and the country’s largest city.
Archaeological evidence has revealed that the area of Tbilisi was settled as early as the 4th millennium B.C. The earliest recorded accounts of settlement come from the second half of the 4th century AD. Tbilisi became a capital city in the 6th century AD. It became the capital of a unified Georgian state in 1122.
Although the city has been destroyed and rebuilt some 29 times, the Old Town is largely intact with narrow alleys and crooked houses built around courtyards. Tbilisi offers visitors many interesting museums covering the country’s history, as well as botanical gardens and art galleries showing Georgian art. Shoppers come to the city for gold, silver, and other jewelry. Precious stones are very cheap in Georgia and quality of the stones, gold and silver is superb. The prices in Tbilisi are relatively low for practically anything. It is a place where even the best of quality is quite affordable. There are many restaurants and cafes at almost every corner of the city. The quality is good and traditional Georgian food is known to be quite tasty. There is also a collection of international restaurants including an unusual percentage serving East Asian cuisine.
Tbilisi’s safety situation has improved after its independence and Russian invasion. But it is still not one of the safest possible travel destinations. While Tbilisi is not among the areas of highest risk of political conflict in Georgia, you should always check the current safety situation before travelling there.
