When you plan a South Carolina vacation, it can include everything from South Carolina beaches, golf vacations, palm tree shaded gardens and mountain solitude. Many people planning South Carolina vacations begin in Charleston. This city is home to the Charleston Harbor and is the center of much of South Carolina’s cultural life. Columbia, the state capital, is an exciting place for historical tours. A walking tour of the downtown district will reveal some of the oldest buildings in the country. And for American Civil War history buffs, a visit to South Carolina plantations is a must. Although many plantations were destroyed and burned during the American Civil War, many beautiful homes did survive.  Some are still occupied by their original families.

In South Carolina there are forested mountains and towering waterfalls, blackwater rivers and scenic inland lakes, palm tree lined sand beaches and ancient island shores, treasured American historic sites and priceless cultural treasures. Whatever way visitors may choose to enjoy the landscape and people of this great state, travelers should have no trouble finding something interesting in South Carolina.

This only skims the surface of what there is to see and do in South Carolina.

I agree completely! South Carolina’s barrier islands, including Kiawah Island and Hilton Head Island, are particularly beautiful. With wide, flat beaches, lush palm trees, and warm temperatures most of the year, these remarkable islands feel like a different world and yet are so close!
