Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba and its largest city.

Located at the confluence of the historic Red and Assiniboine Rivers, Winnipeg was incorporated as a city in 1873.

You will be traveling near the geographic center of North America when you visit Winnipeg. Winnipeg has many recreational opportunities as it lies in close proximity to hundreds of lakes including Lake Winnipeg, the world’s 11th largest lake. Winnipeg is one of Canada’s most culturally enriched centers, yet it receives an unfair reputation because of the notoriously long, cold Manitoban winters. One may take a relaxing cruise on the Assiniboine and Red rivers, or an outdoor theater production, or go inside the wonderful Centennial Center to listen to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Perhaps, the most popular Winnipeg attraction is the Forks National Historic Site that for over 5,000 years this has been a trade and meeting place. Another Winnipeg attraction is the Exchange District which is made up of thirty blocks of well preserved turn of the century buildings.

Fit in some time for shopping. Winnipeg Square, Eaton Place and Portage Place all provide great indoor shopping options. Winnipeg also has a wide selection of affordable fine dining establishments featuring cuisines from around the world. One may be entertained by various festivals held during the year such as the Fringe Festival and the annual Boozefest, as well as a winter park and market. And don’t forget the world famous Manitoba Museum which is noted for its dramatic walk-through settings. Whether it’s a visit to the zoo, art gallery or the beach, Winnipeg offers its visitors and residents lots to do every day of the week.

Winnipeg is safe in comparison to many large cities in North America and crime rarely involves tourists who exercise the same degree of caution they would in any other city setting.

Daytime highs in July and August average around 79 F (26 C). The winters are long and cold with temperatures dropping below -4 F (-20 C) on most winter nights.
