Fredericton area was first permanently settled in 1732 by Acadians fleeing the British in Nova Scotia. When New Brunswick became a separate colony from Nova Scotia in 1784, Ste. Anne’s Point became the provincial capital was later renamed “Frederick’s Town,” in honor of Prince Frederick Augustus, Duke of York.
In the capital of Canada’s only bilingual province, there’s history on every street corner and natural wonders on the doorstep. It also hosts the annual Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, attracting regional and international jazz and blues artists. And you can hear the sounds and ceremony of summer at the New Brunswick Highland Games and Scottish Festival in July. Fredericton has several shopping complexes, plus a few “Plazas” at major intersections. Fredericton is far more cosmopolitan than many other cities its size. This is reflected in cuisine offered by local restaurants (which include Caribbean, Chinese, Greek, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, and others). However, don’t come to Fredericton for the food. Restaurants are generally poor and over priced.
