Liverpool is a city of Merseyside, England, along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary.

King John’s letters patent of 1207 announced the foundation of the borough of Liverpool but it wasn’t granted city status untill 1880. The first commercial wet dock was built in Liverpool in 1715 and by the start of the 19th century, 40% of the world’s trade was passing through Liverpool. During the Second World War there were 80 air-raids on Merseyside, causing damage to almost half the buildings in the metropolitan area. In the 1960s Liverpool was the center of the “Merseybeat” sound which became synonymous with The Beatles and other Liverpool rock bands.

It is more than just a city with a big reputation, it’s the center of an area of culture and entertainment that deserves exploration. A stroll around the UNESCO-listed waterfront will take up a morning and in fact, Liverpool was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2008.

The main shopping street in Liverpool is dominated by the same chain stores you’ll find in any other large U.K. city, though there are some local specialty shops. The city does have an excellent selection of restaurants and pubs serving food. The two main areas for good dining are City Center and Lark Lane about three miles from the city center in Aigburth. Try a local dish known as “scouse,” a form of stew, which often gives the nickname of ’scousers’ to residents of the city..
