What are some natural remedies for morning sickness during pregnancy?

You are happy, ecstatic, and over the top with your new pregnancy. Then come those dreaded waves of nausea that can put a damper on the happiest of times – morning sickness! And you quickly discover that it doesn’t necessarily happen only in the morning. What can you do?

Fortunately,  for most women, morning sickness usually goes away after the first three months of pregnancy. Even so,  there is nothing worse than feeling sick to your stomach when your belly is bulging and you might have an outside job or other children to care for throughout the day (duly noted as one of the hardest jobs on the planet!)

Following are some of the best natural remedies for morning sickness compiled by pregnant women throughout the ages.  If one doesn’t work, try another!

First and foremost, do NOT take prenatal vitamins on an empty stomach! I made this mistake during one of my pregnancies until I realized that I was pulling over to the side of the road and throwing open the door too many times after taking my vitamins! Take your vitamins with food!

Secondly, don’t go too long with an empty stomach – period! Try to eat snacks between regular meals that include protein, fat and carbohydrates. Examples would be peanut butter or cheese on crackers, nuts with raisins, a fruit smoothie with yogurt, a healthy oatmeal cookie, etc. If you can’t bear the thought of complex food, try simple carbohydrates like pretzels, bagels, dry cereal, plain popcorn, or a light protein like sour yogurt in between meals. Don’t let the acids in your stomach start churning without some food to digest.

Eat before you go to bed and as soon as you open your eyes on awakening! I know…this is a no-no for dieters. But you are not dieting. You are pregnant. And there is no harm in eating some cheese and crackers before bed and having another similar snack waiting at your bedside table in the morning. Don’t jump out of bed with an empty stomach during these first few months if morning sickness looms around the corner. Cut yourself some slack and put some food in your stomach even as your head still lies on the pillow!  Choose what is particularly soothing to your own stomach. There are no rules except for what works for you!

Ginger in all its forms can help to ease the nausea of morning sickness. Ginger has been shown effective in clinical trials to ease the nausea from chemotherapy and women swear by its effectiveness in easing  morning sickness as well. Try using ½ tsp. of powdered ginger in boiling water as a tea. Real ginger ale and candied ginger are also good alternatives. If you can’t stomach any of these variations, try ginger capsules as they have also been shown to be effective.

Vitamin B-6 has been effective in combating morning sickness for many pregnant women. An extra 10-25mg up to 3 times per day in addition to your regular prenatal vitamins is the suggested dose, as long as it is cleared by your physician. If your prenatal vitamins are high in B6, this may count as one of the doses.

Peppermint tea and fennel tea are both known remedies for nausea. Crushed fennel seeds should be steeped in boiling water for about 10 minutes and sipped slowly.

Acupressure on the wrist can help some women combat morning sickness just as it works with sea sickness! Try sea bands (which can be bought online and at some health food stores) about three-quarters of an inch down the wrist to apply light pressure.

Hopefully, one of these natural remedies for morning sickness will help you ease through the first trimester and allow you to enjoy your pregnancy with a settled stomach. Just remember that this is the one time in a woman’s life when an empty stomach is a “no-no.” Enjoy eating as best you can!
