Surrounding the historic squares, you’ll find trendy shops along with funky old stores full of fun and gallery after gallery, each one different from the other. And with many award winning restaurants and nationally known chefs, Savannah is becoming as famous for its food as it is for its history.
Savannah has one of the few surviving colonial city plans in the United States and is a testament to the ingenuity of it’s English founders. In 1864 when General William Tecumseh Sherman marched in, the mayor of Savannah gave him and his men full run of the city in exchange for leaving it unburned. Thus, Savannah is one of the few cities in the South with antebellum charm and architecture remaining intact.
Savannah’s coldest month is January when the average temperature overnight is 38.0 degrees Fahrenheit. In July, the warmest month, the average day time temperature rises to 92.3°F. Summer is also the wettest season with many thunderstorms.
Savannah is appalingly high in crime. Inside the tourist areas you’re safe exploring during the day but at night go with other people and even then be cautious.
Savannah is served by Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Public transportation is bus, streetcar, ferry and taxi.
